Three employees of a Canadian silver mining company were found deceased in a mass grave after being abducted from a project site in late January.
Vizsla Silver said on Monday that families of their employees informed the company that they had identified their relatives, who were abducted from a housing development near a mining project in La Concordia, Mexico, two weeks ago.
After the Jan. 23 abduction, Vizsla suspended operations on the project, engaging crisis management and security response teams, as well as working with Mexican officials, who deployed more than 1,200 people to assist in the search-and-rescue operation.
“We are devastated by this outcome and the tragic loss of life,” Michael Konnert, president and CEO of Vizsla, said in a statement. “Our focus remains on the safe recovery of those who remain missing and on supporting all affected families and our people during this incredibly difficult time.”

The employees who were kidnapped — engineers, geologists and security personnel — were reported missing on Jan. 24, with Vizsla confirming the kidnapping and suspending mine operations on Jan. 28. Eight of the 10 men who were taken are Mexican nationals, Mexico News Daily reported.
At a press conference on Monday, Mexican authorities said the remains were found in an advanced state of decomposition in a mass grave in El Verde, a community that is north of La Concordia and the mining site.
Although officials have not confirmed how many human remains were discovered in the grave, family members identified their relatives after their bodies were found late last week, the CBC reported.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday said that several people have been arrested in connection with the abduction and that they have been speaking to prosecutors, although the other seven people who were abducted have not yet been found.
Mexican law enforcement officials said they suspect that the Vizsla employees were abducted by one of several factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, which have been warring with each other for the last year and a half.
The cell that is thought to have kidnapped the miners is linked to Los Chapitos, a faction of the cartel’s members that is loyal to the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who were arrested and jailed separately in the United States last year.
