Police in Thailand said Friday that ASOS co-founder Quentin Griffiths was killed after falling from a high-rise luxury hotel in the coastal resort city of Pattaya.

Griffiths’ body was found at the foot of the building on Feb. 9, but authorities only released the identify of the 58-year-old Briton after a post-mortem found no evidence of foul play.

A police detective told the BBC that the door of Griffiths’ 17th-floor suite, where he was a long-term resident, was locked from the inside and there were no signs of forcible entry or any disturbance or struggle inside.

Investigators suggested stress from two protracted legal battles he was fighting may have been a factor in his death.

One of those legal battles was with his second wife, a Thai woman from whom he was separated, over a business they co-owned.

Griffiths launched As Seen On Screen with Nick Robertson and two other partners in London in 2000, retailing apparel emulating the fashions worn by movie and TV celebrities, growing it into a global online clothing phenomenon.

The company sells branded and own label products around the world via mobile and web channels with distribution handled by its own fulfilment centers.

At its peak, ASOS was valued at more than $8 billion with its designs championed by the likes of Rihanna and Michelle Obama.

Griffiths quit in 2005, going onto to start up several other businesses none of which were as successful, but continued to hold a significant equity stake in ASOS, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Other major ASOS shareholders include Mike Ashley, owner of Britain’s Frasers Group, and Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen of Danish clothing giant Bestseller.
