Authorities in Georgia have launched an investigation into the deaths of a 12 people from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at a ski resort.
The Eastern European country’s Interior Minister said in a statement on Saturday that the bodies of 11 foreigners and one Georgian national were discovered in a sleeping area above an Indian restaurant in the Gudauri ski resort, located in northern Georgia near its border with Russia. Advertisement
The victims were employees of the same establishment within the ski resort.
A preliminary investigation found no signs of violence, but a generator had been placed in the middle of the room.
According to the ministry, the facility where the victims were staying had experienced a power outage and the generator had been used in the enclosed space, suggesting that carbon monoxide may be to blame for their deaths.
Local police have launched an investigation under Article 116 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to accidental deaths.
