Multiple explosive devices were thrown at the Russian consulate in France on Monday, sparking a fire.
No injuries were reported after three Molotov cocktails in plastic bottles were hurled at the perimeter wall of the consulate in Marseille, landing in the garden area with two of them exploding Advertisement
The suspects fled the scene and Moscow said the incident had “all the hallmarks of a terror attack.”
“The explosions on the territory of the Russian Consulate General in Marseille have all the hallmarks of a terrorist attack,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakhorova said, according to The Independent.
“We demand [from France] exhaustive and prompt measures to investigate, as well as steps to strengthen the security of Russian foreign missions.”
Firefighters were sent to the scene after the explosions and fire. One report said that a French bomb disposal unit also investigated the site.
The Russian consulate is located in the vicinity of other consulates, including Armenia, Egypt, Principe, Sao Tome, and Tunisia.
The incident comes on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Numerous European leaders along with Canada Justin Trudeau arrived in Kyiv in support of Ukraine and its president Volodymyr Zelensky. Advertisement
