Paraguayan anti-drug authorities seized 311 kilograms of high-potency marijuana concealed inside two pickup trucks imported from Miami, officials said Tuesday.
They said the shipment was a sophisticated smuggling attempt, with the pot believed to be destined for Brazil.
The National Anti-Drug Secretariat, known as SENAD, said its agents discovered the drugs during a routine inspection of a sealed shipping container at the Terport terminal in Villeta, south of Asunción.
The operation was carried out jointly with officials from the National Customs and Tax Directorate after the container was selected through risk analysis and profiling procedures.
According to SENAD, officers found specially built hidden compartments inside both vehicles that contained packages of premium marijuana with high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the principal psychoactive compound in cannabis.
One of the pickup trucks, identified as RAMs by Campo Grande News in Brazil, featured a more sophisticated double-floor concealment system, the agency said.
The marijuana had an estimated value of about $4.3 million on the Brazilian market, based on an estimated price of $14,000 per kiilogram, SENAD said.

Anti-narcotics prosecutor Pamela Pérez, who led the Public Ministry’s investigative procedures, directed the operation, according to the agency.
SENAD Minister Jalil Rachid said Brazil has a strong demand for both conventional and high-potency cannabis.
“Brazil has an enormous marijuana consumer market, from common varieties to premium products,” Rachid said in remarks reported by Paraguayan broadcaster Radio Ñandutí.

Rachid said premium marijuana contains significantly higher concentrations of THC than conventional cannabis, making it more valuable in illicit markets. According to Radio Ñandutí, he described the seized drug as a product with multiple uses because of its elevated psychoactive content.
Paraguayan authorities did not identify the importer of the vehicles or announce any arrests. The investigation remains ongoing, according to SENAD.
