Many demonstrations were held around the globe to protest the actions of Iran’s current regime, which is accused of killing potentially tens of thousands of Iranians.
An estimated 200,000 protesters demonstrated near the Munich Security Conference in Germany, where they were addressed by Reza Pahlavi and U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.
“To President [Donald] Trump, the Iranian people hear you say help is on the way, and they have faith in you. Help them,” Pahlavi told reporters during the security conference.
Many in the crowd waved a version of the Iranian flag that existed before the Iranian Revolution.
Pahlavi is the son of Iran’s deposed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who ruled Iran from 1941 until being overthrown during the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which replaced the shah with the current Islamic Republic.
Saturday’s demonstrations are a response to Pahlavi’s request that those who oppose Iran’s current regime take to the streets and show it.
In London, one protester told media that she is there to support those whose lives have been lost and might be lost as the Iranian government cracks down on protesters who took to the streets amid runaway inflation and a collapsing national economy.
“I am here to ask for human rights and equality and to tell the world that the value of the people who have been lost in Iran are not less than anyone else,” a London protester identified as Kimia, 28, told reporters. “I am here to be their voice because they have been silenced.”
More than 10,000 miles away in Sydney, Australia, protesters raised their collective voice in Hyde Park before they proceeded on foot to Belmore Park.
Other global cities hosting protest events include Toronto and Los Angeles.
Reza Pahlavi lives in the United States, which is sending the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier to the Middle East to join forces with a task force already there and led by the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln amid the Iranian protests.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday addressed a conference of potential regional investors for a proposed railroad project in Iran.
Representatives of Turkey, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and other Middle East nations attended the conference.
Pezeshkian said the nations are working together to peacefully resolve their difference and no “custodian” is needed.
Officials for Iran and the United States are scheduled to meet in Geneva, Switzerland, next week to discuss a potential deal that would preclude another U.S. military action against Iran.
The United States and Israel in June attacked three Iranian uranium enrichment sites.
