Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was listed in stable condition while in intensive care on Tuesday after undergoing emergency brain surgery to address bleeding, physicians said.
Lula, 79, was first taken to a hospital in Brasilia after complaining about a severe headache. An MRI scan identified the brain bleed and he was transported to Siro-Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo to have it drained. Advertisement
A hospital statement said it is believed the bleeding was caused when Lula fell in his bathroom at his presidential residence back in October.
Officials said that the president is expected to remain in intensive care for the next 48 hours.
The October fall forced Lula to drop out of the 2024 BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.
“He is stable, conscious and calm,” Lula’s presidential spokesman Paulo Pimenta said.
Lula became president last year, edging out far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. In a phone call with U.S. President Joe Biden in July, the two discussed the voting in Venezuela and called for the full release of voting data along with collaborating on workers’ rights issues. Advertisement
