Amazon and Microsoft announced separate billion-dollar investments in India aimed at expanding AI services in other key areas, like employment.

On Wednesday, Amazon unveiled plans to invest over $35 billion across its businesses in India through 2030. Microsoft, meanwhile, will invest $17.5 billion over the next four years to expand India’s cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure, workforce training and other in other areas, the company said Tuesday.

We have invested at scale in growing the physical and digital infrastructure for small businesses in India, creating millions of jobs, and taking Made-in-India global,” according to Amit Agarwal, Amazon’s senior VP of emerging markets.

Amazon said by 2030 it will support more than 3 million direct, indirect and seasonal jobs and has digitized 12 million small businesses in India enabling some $20 billion in exports.

Microsoft’s fresh commitment builds on a $3 billion pledge made earlier this year, which the software giant added remained on track for deployed by next year’s end.

It will expand three existing operational data center regions in Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.

On Tuesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the initiative following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“This transformation is anchored on three pillars: hyperscale infrastructure to run AI at scale, sovereign-ready solutions that ensure trust, and skilling programs that empower every Indian to not just join the future but shape it,” Puneet Chandok, president of Microsoft India and South Asia, said in a statement.

Microsoft said it will add advanced AI features to India’s two major employment platforms in its Ministry of Labour and Employment — e-Shram and the National Career Service.

India is targeting to reach more than 310 million Indian citizens.

India’s e-Shram is built on Microsoft Azure and links state aid that drove expansion of India’s social protection coverage from 24% in 2019 to 64% by this year.

“As AI reshapes the digital economy, India remains committed to innovation anchored in trust and sovereignty,” Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s union council minister of electronics, information and broadcasting under Modi, added Tuesday.
