Gunmen kill 11, injure 12 in central Mexico massacre

Gunmen opened fire on a soccer field in central Mexico on Sunday, killing at least 11 people and injuring 12 others, officials said.

The shooting occurred at about 5:20 p.m. local time Sunday following a soccer match on a field in the Loma de Flores neighborhood of Salamanca, local AM media reported.

Some 300 people were at the soccer field when gunmen arrived in three vans and opened fire indiscriminately at the crowd.

Ten people were pronounced dead at the scene, while an additional victim died at the hospital, the Guanajuato State Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

The attorney general’s office for Guanajuato state said it has opened an investigation into the shooting.

In a recorded statement, Salamanca Mayor Cesar Preto said the shooting is part of a wave of violence led by criminal groups trying to “subjugate authorities.”

“Today, we are going through a serious moment, a serious social breakdown,” he said.

“I am asking the president and the governor for support so we can restore peace,” he continued. “We will move forward and those responsible will be found.”
