Hurricane Imelda weakened back to a Category 1 storm Thursday after passing over Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center said.
The storm’s eye was about 230 miles east of Bermuda, according to the 8 a.m. EDT update from the NHC.
Forecasters said Imelda had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph and was moving east-northeast at a rapid 30 mph. The storm is expected to further weaken Thursday and become a tropical storm by Friday afternoon.
“On the forecast track, Imelda will continue moving farther away from Bermuda this morning,” the NHC said.
A tropical storm warning was in effect for Bermuda.
Imelda, the ninth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, is expected to strengthen through Wednesday as it approaches Bermuda and could be a Category 2 storm by the time it nears the island.
